Studio ALTA opens its residency program for 2024 within four programs.

ALTA on ice

Put on your skates and lace them up tight! Studio ALTA is moving onto the ice, transforming the rink into a stage where we invite you to dance, connect, and party. Two days of performances, skating, sharing, and reflecting on what a massive sheet of ice in the middle of the city evokes in us.

Ice skating workshop with Katja Grohmann: Introduction to the IceLab Leipzig methods

We will expand your creative toolbox on ice skates with movement exercises from contemporary dance with a focus on contact improvisation and floorwork. You will learn how to find and use new movements and figures to keep going by yourself. You will gain an insight into the infinite potential of movement on ice skates. Prerequisites: Curiosity, openness to the unfamiliar, basic skating skills (gliding, breaking).

Hvozdění

Walk through a luminous landscape of dark woods and rivers of light. You and the other grains will dissolve, germinate, blend and separate. At one point you may feel alone, but we can tell you that at the end of the process all the grains will come together.

"Hvozdění" is an outdoor intervention by Studio ALTA. The light installations by Martin Hamouz, Štěpán Hejzlar and Magda Hejzlarová bring the old brewery building to life and extend the space of its garden to other, completely imaginary places.

Walk through a luminous landscape of dark woods and rivers of light. You and the other grains will dissolve, germinate, blend and separate. At one point you may feel alone, but we can tell you that at the end of the process all the grains will come together.

"Hvozdění" is an outdoor intervention by Studio ALTA. The light installations by Martin Hamouz, Štěpán Hejzlar and Magda Hejzlarová bring the old brewery building to life and extend the space of its garden to other, completely imaginary places.

Final meeting of Artist to Artist 2024

We invite you to the concluding meeting and presentation of the Artist to Artist platform, which focuses on the functioning of the contemporary independent performative scene. The purpose of the meeting is to share acquired experiences with other members of the cultural community and to find new participants interested in joining the Artist to Artist program for 2025.C

ALTA Tours: Agata Siniarska (Berlin), Miradonna Sirkka / Punctum-Krásovka /

ALTA tour is the nomadic dramaturgy line of Studio ALTA. This time it will lead us to the iconic artspace Puncum-Krásovka in Žižkov. Within one evening, two international artists and their collectives will conclude their residencies and present work-in-progress of their latest works.

All Soul’s Night at the Castle and the Surrounding Area

Gates of the magical garden open, the air is fragrant with smoke and leaves. Darkness descends on ALTA and the Souls of the Dead come to greet us by the campfire... Are you scared? You can be tonight! We will celebrate All Souls' Day with a dose of perhaps slightly creepy silent movies, special spooky drinks, and theatre by Linda Straub. Don't worry, lights and candles will show you the way, and all big fears will disappear.

Artists and Venues / about power and success

In the format of "Artists and Venues," we invite workers from cultural institutions, theaters and artists to a two-day gathering. Through discussions, workshops, movement, lectures, and sharing, we will ask what power we hold, how our actions affect others, what power we have over ourselves, and how we can distribute and make it accessible to prevent its misuse. We are interested in where power comes from, how to use it for positive change, and as a tool for collaboration. The gathering is part of the KULTIVÁTOR project.

Dorota Michalak & Alica Minar: Lush blast

Can dance mend our ties to the land and intimately imbricate us? Lush Blast is a walking performance in an urban park asking what remains of the wilderness in Europe and in us. Come on an unusual walk and connect with the power of movement and nature.

PARENT-FRIENDLY CULTURE: SYMPOSIUM OF ACCESSIBILITY

How to make performing arts accessible to parents of small children? Three days dedicated to Parent-Friendly Culture, our experiences, insights and inspirations. Due to the planned renovation of Studio ALTA, all the programme will take place at the Žižkostel Community and Cultural Centre. We offer free babysitting during the entire time of the Symposium.

Performance as a free playground for everyone - no matter their age or experience. Here you can imagine the forgotten, see the silent, sound the invisible. Take a break from expectations, plans and tasks. Go back to your childhood for a moment.

OPEN OFFICE

Every Wednesday from 10:00 to 16:00 the Studio ALTA garden will open as a shared workplace. We want to share with you the most valuable thing we have: an intimate and safe space, a warm environment and the surrounding greenery. You can come to us for a while or spend the whole day with us. You can work and rest, read books and write emails. Come with your entire work team. We know that a change of location also enables a change of perspective, and the presence of other people can have a pleasant effect on our work environment.

TETSU is the fire around which we sit, dance, live. We feel it getting stronger and weaker, sometimes we need to avert our eyes from its glow, sometimes we want to fan it with a blow. TETSU is a celebration of movement and life energy. A dance quintet inspired by the Chinese wuxing system will be brought to Studio ALTA by the mimoOs company.

EXPERIENCING LIBEŇ / ATTENTION BIG CHANGE

This day belongs to Libeň. Come and enjoy your favourite neighbourhood to the fullest – experience a day full of culture, good coffee, games, and a lively programme for big and small neighbours as well as those who have just discovered the charm of Libeň. Get to know new places or visit those without which our neighbourhood could no longer be imagined. See you in Libeň!

Rotterdam Youth Symphony Orchestra

Rotterdam Youth Symphony Orchestra announces summer concerts in the Czech Republic.

The Rotterdam Youth Symphony Orchestra (RJSO) is going on tour to the Czech Republic this summer. The largest symphonic youth orchestra in Rotterdam is making the music trip because of the Year of Czech Music in 2024. Under the direction of conductor Jim Roodnat, the Rotterdam Youth. Symphony Orchestra will give various concerts in and around Prague together with soprano Jana Veberová.

Festival of Queer Knowledge

The Festival of Queer Knowledge is a week-long event in Prague. Organized by local non-profit and grassroots initiatives, the festival invites you to get to know queer & feministic approaches, histories, and perspectives. The Festival aims to accommodate voices of both local and international queer cultures, create a communal atmosphere and share the knowledge of many with the entire world.

Butoh in Contemporary Performance: Compositions

In an evening of new works from the professional development project Butoh in Contemporary Performance: Composition, you are invited on a butoh-infused journey from Studio ALTA to Venuše ve Švehlovce. Visiting international artists Yuka Negoro (JP/UK) and Daniel Somerville (UK) and nine local artists will share the results of a 10-day intensive process of professional development dedicated to exploring butoh as a strategy for performance-making and composition. Expect formal innovation, aesthetic variety and plenty of time for reflection and exchange on an evening devoted to collaboration and exploration.

The Living Room is an expedition of the human imagination into the unexplored realm of furniture. It takes place between the walls of a single room – the parallel universe of furniture that coexists with our universe. Here, each object has its own character, each acting in its own unique way. On the border between light and darkness, amidst the quiet scrape of wooden feet and creaking doors, furniture and the human body become a canvas upon which fantastic figures emerge and fade again. In his project, Lukáš Karásek balances on the edges of masked theatre, dance, and circus, and plays an exciting game full of imagination and humor.
The show is followed by a marbles tournament.

3 EXTRAORDINARY DAYS AT ALTA… THE LIVING ROOM COMES TO LIFE, MARBLES ARE ROLLING, AND SUMMER BREAK IS AROUND THE CORNER.

While our theatre is undergoing renovation, we are holding the Libeň Marbles Championship. Who will hit it the best? Dump your marbles on the ground and let's get to it. The tournament will take place under professional supervision of the world champion Pavel Zoufalý. Only we had to move out the furniture, so hopefully it will be ok if it joins us. Flick!

ALTA YOUNG AND RESTLESS

The holidays are behind us, the summer is ahead. So stop for a moment, we won't evaluate you. We dedicate two days in June to the youngest artistic creation, the necessary meeting of budding artists and mutual inspiration and care.
What do young artists deal with? How to become an artist and how to remain one?
Is age just a number? And a youthful state of mind? We invite everyone who wants to meet the young artistic generation and its work.

ALTA CAMP

A tent has grown up in front of the Studio ALTA. We live in it, you and I. And Pankaj Tiwari, the artist who built it here. For 3 days, we will explore what is in the tent and what is not in the stone theater. What were the cultural institutions of today? Free discussion and dinner every day for anyone who wants to stop by. Camping allowed.

You need to rest. Stay in place for a while. Where just a moment ago the fire was burning, now it is still. The bodies are exhausted, time has slowed. Rest at last. But how long can it be sustained? In Tremula, the artist Eliška Brtnická and the dancer Martina Hajdyla meet on stage for the first time, this time the dancer Markéta Vacovská will perform in her place. Together with director Jana Stárková, they search for the intersections of their artistic approaches in pure physicality, which they further develop in collaboration with composer Ian Mikyska and visual artist Pavel Havrda.

One by one, start collecting plant specimens for your herbarium for the new year. Dance with the bushes. You're shivering like a leaf! So join us once again by the campfire. The scent of wood, the warmth of the campfire and the sun, and maybe even a brief spring storm. The new season in Libeň is here!

SPA: PerformanceBus (as a part of the festival Malá inventura)

The Magic Bus is on its way for the fourth time! This time Mr. Marcel, the driver, will take us to the region of Jičín. Cultural experiences of course, but count on unforgettable stories, numerous surprises and many new friendships. This trip is also part of the Malá inventura festival. Let's go!

ALTA NA LEDU

Ice as a stage, ice as a theme. For four days in January, we are moving Studio ALTA to a temporary ice rink!

The first evening, titled SURFACES, will let the movements of contemporary dance and figure skating mingle and watch how they complement and influence each other. Can you hear it? The second icy evening will feature GLISSANDO, a collective sound composition created just while we skate. On the third day, ice will be the theme for us. We will focus on the current state of glaciers in the ANTARCTIDA, and the intersection of science and art. The four nights on the ice will end with a neighborly 𝘊𝘈𝘙𝘕𝘐𝘝𝘈𝘓 𝘉𝘈𝘕𝘘𝘜𝘌𝘛. Let’s march in the carnival parade in Libeň! We invite all masks to join. In this parade, you can be whatever you feel like and enjoy the joys and wildness of carnival with our neighbours.

MASOPUSTNÍ BANQUET

𝘊𝘈𝘙𝘕𝘐𝘝𝘈𝘓 𝘉𝘈𝘕𝘘𝘜𝘌𝘛 Let's march in the carnival parade in Libeň! We invite all masks to join. In this parade, you can be whatever you feel like and enjoy the joys and wildness of carnival with our neighbours.

RESIDENCIES 2024 _ OPEN CALL

Residences for 2024 are here! And we can't wait to see what projects we will provide a home, an incubator and a magical sparkling compost. We're opening up 3 residency programs right now: for projects that only have a finish line left to go, for artists are looking for a place to deep dive and experiment, and a third for anyone who needs a moment to breathe and just rest in one place.

SPA: PerformanceBus (On the road again, and off to new adventure)

Our very special trip is back! On the road again, and off to new adventure.
We're getting ready our third PerformanceBus and, with our driver Marcel at the wheel, we will set off on another exploratory trip, this time to the southwest. We’ll make a stop at Sladovna v Písku, Sam83 gallery, Moving Station in Pilsen as well as ‘random’ parking lots or a field embankment. We don't have more tickets than there are seats on the bus!
The event is a part of Theatre Night.

Alica Minar: Wobbly

A creature that playfully, without thinking, discovers the world and plunges itself into the present moment. On the border between abstraction and narration, Wobbly balances itself precariously above triviality. As a ball of unimaginably massive problems suddenly untangles, we are confronted with emptiness and oversaturation and our inner world begins to glow with color. The driving force behind this quirky movement poem is the desire for the heart to leap.

All Soul’s Day at the castle and sub-castle

Night is coming down, fall is in the air and the most magical evening in Libeň is beginning. Together we will celebrate the All Soul's Day with everything that belongs to it. We'll explore the mystery together, be touched, a little scared and enjoy a magical evening. A portion of poetic theatre, dark performances and catharsis with lots of lights awaits us. Bring your loved ones and celebrate the holiday of memories with us.
All Soul’s Eve will be a walk-through from the castle to the under-castle.

ALTA FRIENDS: A.REAL TALK 

We invite you to A.REAL Talk and to the specific ways of inhabiting our bodies and creating space for dialogue. Beyond time and space, beyond the everyday fight for survival, there is a space of infinity, where borders are meaningless, struggles for power transform into smiles and contradictions cooperate.  We will show videos, talk and create a space for us to experience different perspectives, embodied practices and tools for working towards a better and (more) sustainable dance environment.

tYhle & Lukáš Karásek: Living room

The Living Room is an expedition of the human imagination into the unexplored realm of furniture. It takes place between the walls of a single room – the parallel universe of furniture that coexists with our universe. Here, each object has its own character, each acting in its own unique way. On the border between light and darkness, amidst the quiet scrape of wooden feet and creaking doors, furniture and the human body become a canvas upon which fantastic figures emerge and fade again. In his project, Lukáš Karásek balances on the edges of masked theatre, dance, and circus, and plays an exciting game full of imagination and humor.

The House of Research is a twelve-day residency program designed as a shared space, a laboratory, for three individual artists and their research. The house serves primarily for processes in their early stage, for experimentation and building-up material, as well as a possibility for deeper immersion (or, conversely, emergence) from artistic research, or as a means to explore new layers of one's own artistic practice.

This year, the House of Research is inhabited by three artists with strong theatre practice: Jiří Šimek, Katrīna Dūka [Riga] a Rodridgo Batista [Gent]. In their collectively wowen event which will conclude the residency stay, the artists will share with you notes from their research, methodologies, observations and practices.

Antoinette Helbing: Laughter Somatics / workshop

Come to learn how to laugh! Join us for a workshop led by choreographer and performer Antoinette Helbing who will share her knowledge of laughter – a practice she has carried on for 5 years. Antoinette will guide participants to enter a state of pure and genuine laughter. The exercises and methods used by the artist to trigger laughter are based on the Feldenkrais method and laughter yoga.

Michiyasu Furutani: fell, in turn,

Thinking of gravity as one of the crucial elements of Butoh, Furutani’s artistic background with performer Lucia Bricco, this stage work invites audiences to witness experiments on how gravity intuitively effects and binds us by interactions with several objects.
The presentation consists of several sequences to assess the capability of gravity not only as an attractive force in physics but also as “a binding force” amongst a movable body and in-animated objects, in which the movements will reveal inseparable relationship between biosphere and human being.

Michiyasu Furutani: A workshop through Gravity and Spontaneity

Venuše ve Švehlovce Venuše ve Švehlovce in collaboration with Studio ALTA announces a series of masterclasses and performances by three international artists whose work is informed by the practice of butoh. In this series of encounters, you’ll witness and experience different artists’ butoh practices, as they share their understanding of butoh and its role in their performance-making or choreographic practice. Each artist will also present the Czech premiere of a performance that draws on their Butoh practice. A total of six artists will be selected and receive a stipend of 9000 CZK to support their participation. With the stipend, we want to make self-education in contemporary performing arts more accessible and create a secure space for learning and focused attention.

Residencies 2023 – Open Call House of Rest

The House of Rest could be understood as a residential spa designated to our colleagues from the art industry who feel overloaded, pressured by the need for constant production or just looking for a zone of peace and their own thoughts. It could become an excuse to slow down, to recalibrate one’s practice or a space for laziness and care, a vacuum. The content of the residency is not contingent on any output or participation in any activities.
The deadline for applications is Sunday, February 19.

HOW WE ARE

In 2023 Studio ALTA is moving to a new location – the neighbourhood of Palmovka and Libeň. By relocating our activities we’re also shifting our attention– from the depths of our reflections to the surfaces of who and how we are. We’re mapping our own situatedness, how and whom we impact, and we search for paths to new alliances.
This year’s first show is presented by Studio ALTA in collaboration with the gallery and art space SVĚTOVA 1. Through a mini-series of events entitled HOW WE ARE, we observe what’s happening on the surface of our reality.

While “boys will be boys,” girls will be sluts. A thrilling energy, folklore, and an opening night that you should definitely not miss this year!

The night has begun, Invalidovna oąpens its doors. A site-specific project of the collective Subtopia will light up the darkness and interweave Invalidovna spaces in this performance and visual arts based installations centred on the theme of resilience. The aurora draws a line, marks a horizon that is a division between heaven and earth. What a sacred moment every time the sun goes down. The sun goes down every day. It rises and falls again, repetitively every day.

Aurora is a dance piece, a hypnotic and meditative experience. It tells us about relationships, the fragility and the power of the encounter between two. In an attempt to answer the question about belonging, about what gives poise throughout life; looking for some sacred event, something unique, something strong and intense that provides a reason; the sky appears.

Semi-opening of the future location of Studio ALTA in Libeňský pivovar

The year 2023 is going to bring great changes – we are leaving Invalidovna and moving to new premises. Our new refuge, new ALTA, is a former brewery, Panský pivovar, in Prague’s district Libeň. Gradually we’re putting down roots, getting used to it and seeping through the new building, its history and location. The very first time we open the new ALTA doors – we will fill the space up with art, walk you through it, and together with students of the Czech Technical University in Prague ponder the question of its potential. Dancer and choreographer Martina Hajdyla Lacová and stage designer and performer Zuzana Sceranková present a play that will absorb you into an absolute concentration and will not let you catch a breath.

It’s All About Education… Again

For the course of three weeks Studio ALTA once again transforms into a university of artistic practices – this time focusing on three themes: health, hell, and hegemony, featuring a range of workshops and lectures, a lesson of self-defence and dance, concerts, brainstorming, as well as a shared moment of good sleep and dreaming.
The events are free and open to the public every other weekday and on weekends.

SE.S.TA: Residence for choreographers with coaching / work in progress

Come and see residents of this year and their new projects!
The Residence for choreographers with coaching is a prestigious project of SE.S.TA. Every year renowned international artists - coaches come to Prague and work with selected young choreographers and their teams from all over the world to develop their work. The residency is internationally established and helps Czech choreographers to win recognition outside the country. There is a traditional presentation event at the end of the residency. That is probably the only opportunity to see their work in the Czech Republic, especially for foreign participants.

14th annual international festival Zero Point is back at Studio ALTA! The four day programme is brimming with innovative and refreshing international and Czech works – from dance and visual theatre to performance art. The 2022 edition is focused on a multi-layered nature of human identity.

Dům odpočinku ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ House of Rest

From 4 to 10 July, Studio ALTA will be open as the 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁. In the course of seven days, we would like to share our studio as a temporary shelter with all those who feel fatigued, to offer an oasis for relaxation and create a space where we could together think about strategies that do not consider resting only as a means to even higher performance.

Dům výzkumu (Rodrigo Batista, Katrīna Dūka, Jiří Šimek)

The House of Research is a twelve-day residency program designed as a shared space, a laboratory, for three individual artists and their research. The house serves primarily for processes in their early stage, for experimentation and building-up material, as well as a possibility for deeper immersion (or, conversely, emergence) from artistic research, or as a means to explore new layers of one's own artistic practice.
This year, the House of Research is inhabited by three artists with strong theatre practice: Jiří Šimek, Katrīna Dūka [Riga] a Rodridgo Batista [Gent]. In their collectively wowen event which will conclude the residency stay, the artists will share with you notes from their research, methodologies, observations and practices.

Collective Ways of Doing Things

A space for community meetings, to share experiences and search for a strategy of survival within artistic practice. This time our meeting will be conceived as a cooking session. The process of creating and sharing food recipes will be our guiding principle for creation of relationships and interdisciplinary collaboration in artistic practice. The final dinner will serve as an inspiration for exploration of sources that we need in our practices.

Ceren Oran & The Moving Borders: The Urge

The movement performance Urge Grows, based on the concept of choreographer Ceren Oran, strives to, metaphorically speaking, turn walls of a building into a dance hall. It draws inspiration from the frustrating experiences of the year-and-a-half long pandemic and isolation, and transforms them into a joyful and lively event, purposely situated in a public space.

The collage from fragments of motherhood moments is inspired by motherly characters from the book of poems, Kytice (The Bouquet), by Jaromír Erben. This experience will touch the inner you and your senses – you should expect an eye band, headphones, tactile objects, smell, stories, and particularly a journey into your own imagination.

Open ateliers – Barbecue and meeting with Solidarity Network Local local in the garden of the Invalidovna

The meeting of the solidarity network is our yearly occasion to thank and meet personally with everyone who is involved in the solidarity network or in any way contributed to its development. We will be having a small barbecue in the garden and 3 music interpreters during the evening: DJ Cesar Chunk, Václav & Murat and Bróňa. In the café of Alta there will be drinks and during the informal meeting we will sit in the garden or see the beautiful barock building from inside.

We have lost everything. We lost our home, fortune, family and relatives. We have become no one overnight. Because of that we have decided to flee. To flee to the Europe to find a new hope for safe life and home. However we ended up here. Locked between fences. We are unwanted here in Europe as well. Our journey became endless like a vicious circle. Kilometer, kilometer, kilometer.

River Room is an impossible game to map an environment that is in motion, a fragment of the world in its becoming. This map is still but not static: it is quivering, flowing, spinning. If everything is moving where is here?

Sergio Patricio: Hydra

"Hydra" is a performative sculpture project, where Murano crystals become a restrictive apparatus that allows certain actions and particular movements. The creative process of two artists: Benjamin Podoba and Sergio Patricio use Murano glass as the medium between both to merge their practices and reflections. Glass as an eco-friendly material is activated in 10-15 min. long slow motion sequence of movements and actions.

TEH Conference 93

Trans Europe Halles is a network connecting independent cultural centres across Europe that use for their activities abandoned buildings and transform them into lively centres for art and culture. Studio ALTA is a long-time member of this platform and this year it also hosts the international conference TEH 2022 exploring the theme of cultivation. The conference will take place from 26 to 29 May. We will be listening to each other and learn how to understand our activity within a broader ecosystem and sustain healthy environment in order to function. Together we will examine themes such as team work, a search for an ideal relationship between quality and quantity in dramaturgy, but also, for instance, a re-instalment of imagination.

Support Ukraine

Unfortunately, the war in Ukraine is still going on, but so is our support.
We are launching a new donation in support of Ukraine in partnership with Blindspots. This is a donation of food, gas masks and walkie talkies. You can bring the items directly to Studio ALTA - the west wing of the Karlin's Invalidovna. The next destination of the collection is the humanitarian warehouse Khmelnytskyi, from where the items go to the frontline, but also to the civilian population in actual need.
The collection will continue until 25 May.

Michaela Petrů: INvalid dream

Michaela Petrů, a graduate of the Rittstein studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, explores boundaries of painting and opportunities offered by material. In the project Invalid Dream, she focuses her attention on one of Prague districts, Karlín, and its transformation from a working-class location to an area sough-after by developers.

Since last Thursday we have been gradually waking up into a new world, a world full of open wounds that will not heal. We wake up with questions about how to continue our daily activities and find meaning in it, we try to find direction in our capacity to express solidarity, how to help and whom to help, and we go to bed at night with unsettling thoughts about what the next day will bring.

Join us on Friday 4 March for Stand With Ukraine, a community gathering where we can support each other.
From 17:00 – 20:00 a series of short performances, statements, readings, and interventions by artists from Studio ALTA community will take place. We will also coordinate donations for humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

The first edition of Zero Point festival was realized in 2009. This audiovisual installation will make good use of artist´s experience with string instruments manufacturing. Visitors can listen to the objects, play them or just observe them. The meditative sounds are alternated by fairytale stories narrated by the author.
