What is the potential of utopias? What if we try to understand utopias not just as impossible scenarios detached from reality, but rather as a tool of possible change-making in the field? Through the whole-day session, we will establish a temporary collective working in four trajectories, searching for strategies on how to design the utopias and bring them back to earth of our practices. We will depart from a common point, spread into smaller groups, facilitated by speculative experts & strangers and eventually come back together and materialize our knowledge in a zine, which will be printed and distributed to the community.

TRAJECTORIES

TOWARDS ‚ABOLITIONIST‘ CURATING _ Magdalena Jadwiga Härtelova The Towards “Abolitionist” Curating module will facilitate a conversation about the possibilities of continuing to work in the art world towards the end of art as we know it. To investigate, we will use anarchist theory, methodologies developed by prison abolitionists, and knowledge of the restorative justice movement.

TAROT ON CULTIVATING UTOPIAS _ Petr Dlouhý Cultivating Utopias tarot session proposes a semi-speculative and semi-magic collective approach to future imagining. It condenses our dreams and visions while dealing with monsters hidden under our beds of everyday agendas. Without imagining a change, there is no change. Cultivating utopias as a survival strategy how not to fall into the hollows of dystopic despair.

Magdalena Jadwiga Härtelova is a Czech-Sorbian curator and artist living in Berlin. They run the Mehringplatz 20 bedroom gallery and, together with Cassie Thornton and others, are one of the co-conspirator of The Hologram project, a peer-to-peer care protocol practiced from couches all over the world. Their ongoing projects involve the temporary university for post-artistic practices It’s All About Education at Studio ALTA in Prague, practical accessibility training for art institutions, strategizing for curating towards the end of Art-as-we-know-it, and connecting with initiatives organizing towards cooperatively created health autonomy. Härtelova received her MA degree in Curatorial Practice program at California College of the Arts.

Petr Dlouhý could be perceived as a curator, researcher, producer and culture organizer. Yet, he would rather call himself a host, an attentive listener or a mycelium that creates connections and facilitates the cross-pollination of knowledge and practices. And sometimes he sees himself even as a smuggler, who subverts the institutionalized order with an informal approach while trying to support those who are not recognized by the official structures. Petr is operating mainly in Prague, but he is used to moving across the alternate homes spread in diverse locations in Europe. This is only possible due to the kinship he maintains with the artists and conspirators he works for / with.

Matyáš Grimmich is an artist and co-initiator of the Transfer Collective, an experimenting group questioning the ways how we coexist together and how we approach unity. He is also a co-initiator of the Group of Fulfilled Wishes. Matyáš is a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. The Group of fulfilled wishes is a peer-group that was created as a laboratory for exploring ways to organize and create a common “us”. One of the roots was the need to find an alternative to the individualistic and toxic culture of Prague art schools. Fittingly, the group was formed outside of these institutions during the spring of 2021 in the Cross Attic space. This group aspires to be a culture change agent.
