Information

A tent has grown up in front of the Studio ALTA. We live in it, you and I. And Pankaj Tiwari, the artist who built it here. For 3 days, we will explore what is in the tent and what is not in the stone theater. What were the cultural institutions of today? Free discussion and dinner every day for anyone who wants to stop by. Camping allowed.

Pankaj Tiwari – TENT: A School of Performative Practices (Amsterdam)

“I grew up listening a story from my father, about a mountain and a person. There was heavy rain, and people did not have anywhere to go in. One person put some courage and took the mountain up and everyone could come in.” Pankaj Tiwari

~

TENT: A School of Performative Practices is that mountain, a space of possibility and imagination, which invites all(most) to come in. It is a temporary and mobile space of mutual learning and collective imagination.

When I see institutions around, I feel that they have strong buildings, technologies, resources, but these institutions lack space for listening or most of the people do not feel represented by them. These institutions become static. The air circulation in those buildings is too old and started stinking.

TENT is an open space, body and structure. Without static walls, it allows fresh air to circulate in it. It is a space, where we can imagine, try, converse, think and create all the possibilities, which we can not do in other spaces and institutions. In front of big theatres and buildings, the tent can be seen as very weak. It can even fly just with the wind, but this is its strength. This is how TENT is accessible and gives space to others. We want the TENT to be a catalyst and do not want it to exist permanently.

We are inviting TENT: A School of Performative Practices to the environment of Studio ALTA at a time of multiple turmoils. ALTA as well as many other institutions are facing significant challenges that question the core of their existence. How are our institutions governed? Who owns them and what sort of agency do they give to all actors who contribute to the organization with their work or their presence (artists, audience, culture workers)? And how to create a space where their voice could be heard?

Every evening from 19:00-21:00, Pankaj Tiwari together with a community of practitioners will be hosting a free dinner that will come along with conversations unwrapping the current institutional challenges.

During the day, from 10:00-18:00, TENT will be an open space for sharing practices and politics. If you would like to become a part of a temporary community of practitioners, undertake crucial and less crucial discussions and reflect on your work, inform Studio ALTA`s curator Petr Dlouhý (petr@altart.cz) or simply come around. It is ok to come only for a couple of hours, the whole day or for the entire process. We will also provide a possibility to bring your own tent and camp overnight at ALTA`s garden.

Throughout the temporary structure of TENT, staying with each other, learning and eating together, we want to make Studio ALTA a place for many.
